Bring It On: The Musical
Bring It On: The Musical
A Tony Award-winning creative team has been assembled for Bring It On: The Musical, an original musical set in the world of competitive cheerleading.
Andy Blankenbuehler (Tony Award-winning choreographer of In the Heights) will direct and choreograph the new musical, which boasts a book by Avenue Q Tony winner Jeff Whitty, music by In the Heights Tony winner Lin-Manuel Miranda and Next to Normal Tony winner Tom Kitt and lyrics by High Fidelity's Amanda Green.
Tony Award winner Alex Lacamoire (In the Heights, Wicked) will serve as orchestrator, arranger and music supervisor.
A developmental regional production is expected in early 2011, with a national tour to follow.
In a statement Blankenbuehler said, "The explosive world of cheerleading heightens so naturally to the stage. I can't imagine a more perfect team to bring this musical to life on stage. Jeff Whitty has come up with an enticing original story, and Lin-Manuel Miranda and Tom Kitt, two of Broadway's most talented composers, are joining their amazing creative forces to write the score. With Amanda Green collaborating on lyrics and musical supervision by Alex Lacamoire, this team is a director and choreographer's dream."

Little Miss Sunshine Musical Set for Sundance White Oak Lab
Sundance Institute Theatre Program producing artistic director Philip Himberg helms the annual developmental lab that is scheduled to run Oct. 25-Nov. 8.
"This is a critical time for the arts, and we're honored to provide creative resources and energy to these gifted artists," said Himberg in a statement. "This year's projects hold special meaning for Sundance Institute since the film versions both found audiences at the Sundance Film Festival, and we're thrilled that these well-loved stories will be finding new life on the stage. Although we have always supported both emerging and established artists, the Sundance Theatre Program has yet to have the opportunity to support either Mr. Lapine or Mr. Finn in the development of new work. It is also meaningful to be extending our lab to two international artists – Lila Downs and Paul Cohen of Mexico City - who are crossing over to collaborate with American musical theater artists. In our eighth iteration of Sundance Institute Theatre Lab at White Oak, it is a great pleasure to support these two musical theatre projects."
Workshopped will be the William Finn and James Lapine adaptation of the quirky 2006 film drama "Little Miss Sunshine." Finn (Falsettos, A New Brain, Elegies, Spelling Bee) pens the score to the musical that has book and direction by Tony and Pulitzer Prize winner James Lapine (Falsettos, Spelling Bee, Sunday in the Park with George, Passion).
"The story follows the travails of the dysfunctional Hoover family as they make their way in a vintage yellow VW bus from Albuquerque to Southern California for a kid's beauty pageant," according to Sundance.
Sundance Institute associate artist Janice Paran and Second Stage associate artistic director Chris Burney will serve as dramaturges for the White Oak Lab. Casting will be announced shortly.

Andrew Lloyd Webber to Write Six New Songs for Wizard of Oz Musical
Speaking of his forthcoming additions to a score written for the screen by Harold Arlen, Lloyd Webber said, “Of course all the favorites will be there—‘Over the Rainbow,’ one of the greatest songs ever, ever written. I’m not even going to try to challenge that.”
The composer of Cats gave a tongue-in-cheek aside about auditions for Dorothy’s pet: “I, as a cat man, might not see the dogs.” Noting, however, that his daughter has a terrier named Dolly, Lloyd Webber added, “Even this ‘cats’ man sometimes can be softened in his heart by a really lovely dog.”
The busy composer, who is putting finishing touches on his Phantom of the Opera sequel, Love Never Dies, posted the video from an airport en route to checking out a Canadian production of The Boys in the Photograph, his musical originally known as The Beautiful Game. Meanwhile, Phantom, Broadway’s longest running show, is set to play its 9,000th performance on September 16 at the Majestic Theatre.

Harrison Ford Cracks the Whip on Indy 5
Harrison Ford, 67, says he's already ready for the globe-trotting archaeologist's next adventure, only a year after one of history's most successful film franchises wasrevived – and that the next chapter is already well on its way.
"The story for the new Indiana Jonesis in the process of taking form," Ford told France's Le Figaro. "Steven Spielberg, George Lucas and myself are agreed on what the fifth adventure will concern, and George is actively at work. If the script is good, I'll be very happy to put the costume on again."
The screen legend was on hand to accept a career honor at the Deauville Film Festival, with partnerCalista Flockhart on his arm.
In June, while promotingTransformers: Revenge of the Fallen,Shia LaBouef – who plays Indiana Jones' son, Mutt – told the BBC, "Steven's just said that he's cracked the story."
Domestic Duties
But until it's again time to fight Nazis and Stalinists and overcome the supernatural, Ford says he's happy to be a simple househusband."I do the dishes. And I make dinner," he said. "In the mornings, I get my 8-year-old son, Liam ready for school, and then I pass my time flying around in my planes. You see, I'm just like anybody else. My children are between 8 and 42, and I'm also a grandfather."
Though he's got Indy in the works and two films (Morning Glory and The Crowley Project) set for release next year, Ford says there's one stereotypical actor's ambition he's happy to leave alone.
"[Directing]'s too hard, too long, and it doesn't pay enough!" he joked. "To be a good filmmaker is the hardest job in the world. I'm not patient enough. And I don't want to be the boss."
